Watch Out for Scam Moving Services in New Jersey!
We’ve written before about the importance of doing your research on moving companies before you hire them. Movers have access to your home, your belongings, and your personal information, so hiring a reputable, licensed service is critical to not only to the success of your move, but to the safety of your home and family. Unfortunately, a new report shows that unlicensed moving services in New Jersey are far more widespread than you might think. (To be clear, American Movers Inc. is licensed both with the U.S. DOT and the state of New Jersey).
According to Legal Newsline, New Jersey Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino announced on December 16 that the Division of Consumer affairs fined 21 different moving services in New Jersey for operating unlicensed businesses. The effort to catch these unlicensed companies was called “Operation Mothers Attic,” and each violator was charges a $2,500 fine.
So how do you make sure your moving company is reputable and licensed? First, look for the company’s U.S. DOT and New Jersey license numbers on their website (ours are USDOT 1688254 and NJ License PC00241 and are listed on the bottom of our site), or ask the moving company to send it to you. Then, you can look up the company on the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs website, here, and the U.S. Department of Transportation website, here.
Protect your belongings and ensure you’re hiring a legitimate business by doing a little extra research up front! It could save you major headaches in the long run.
