4 Tips for Downsizing to a Smaller Home

There seems to be a trend going around, especially among senior citizens, to sell your large home and downsize into a smaller, more manageable home. While this trend encompasses more than just senior citizens, it is growing and becoming more and more popular. In fact, it is so popular that there are now reality TV shows about people living in “tiny homes.” But, how do you go about downsizing your possessions and move into a smaller home?

Take Inventory of Your Current Home

Before you begin to pack up your current home, take inventory. Moving to a smaller space means that you probably aren’t going to be able to take everything from your current home with you. When you are going through your home, taking an inventory will give you a better idea of what you can take with you and what you can afford to sell or donate before your New Jersey movers arrive. During this process, be sure to include everything, including smaller items that are easily overlooked, like books or movies.

Measure Everything

There’s nothing worse than paying to move large furniture to your new, smaller home and have it not fit in your living room or bedroom. Take precise measurements of all your furniture and your new home to ensure that everything fits properly. If something won’t fit, don’t pack it in the moving truck. Creating a sample floor plan of your new home and drawing out where every piece of furniture will go can help you determine what will fit and what you need to toss before you move.

Organization

When moving to a smaller space, sift through your possessions and determine what you want to take, what you want to donate, and what you want to throw out. Having unnecessary items and excess “stuff” will only make your small space feel and appear smaller. After you have inventoried your current home, go through the list to see what items you don’t use or want anymore. Go through your home and make three piles, one to keep, one to donate/sale and one to throw away.

Get Started Early

Packing is stressful and can often feel overwhelming, but don’t put it off. There is a lot that will need to be done prior to moving day, including taking inventory and purging unwanted items. Each of these tasks will take time to complete, so get started as soon as you possible. When you wait until the last minute, you run the risk of throwing out items that you might have needed or wanted your New Jersey movers to transport to your new home.
