How to Save Money on Your Move
Moving is one of life’s most expensive events. There’s down payments checks to write, furniture to buy, and movers to hire. If you’re looking for ways to cut moving costs without cutting corners, here are a few ways you can save money on your move.
Move during the “off season.” From a cost standpoint, the fall, winter, and very early spring are the best times of the year to move. That’s because this is the moving “off-season,” when fewer people are swapping homes and apartments. Take advantage of everything from lease deals (especially in large apartment buildings), to lower prices on moving services.
Move mid-week. If you can’t arrange your move to fall during the months of September-April, consider scheduling your move so it falls mid-week. Again, this is due to supply and demand — moving companies are typically booked solid most weekends, and are likely to offer deals to customers who are willing to move during the week when their schedule is wide open.
Get multiple quotes. Whether you’re hiring a moving company, shopping around for new cable service, or finding a handyman to repaint your new place, it can literally pay to get quotes from at least three service providers. That way, you can be sure you’re getting a good deal, and it will also raise red flags if any of the pricing seems too good to be true.
Purge your home. Getting rid of the things you don’t use anymore before a move can save money in a few ways. For one, moving companies often charge by volume — the more boxes you have to move, the more expensive your move will be. Also: having a yard sale can actually make you money on things like your unused furniture, sporting equipment, and tools.
