Tips for Staging Your Home for a Move

If you’re planning a move and you need to sell your home fast, or your place has been on the market for a while and isn’t garnering a ton of interest, it might be time to consider how you’re presenting it. Staging your home effectively–so that the decor and atmosphere appeal to as many people as possible–can make all the difference in a home that sells quickly, and one that sits on the market month after month. If you’re thinking about staging your home, here are a few tried and true tips for doing it right.

1. Pare down your belongings. If you’ve lived in your home for a while (or you just have a tendency to accumulate clutter), potential homebuyers might see that your house is bursting at the seams, making it appear smaller than it actually is. Before you put your home on the market, it’s wise to sell, donate, or throw out anything you don’t use on a regular basis. If it’s furniture that’s taking up too much room, consider renting a storage unit for a few months to house bulkier pieces until your home sells.

2. Put away anything overly personal. Who doesn’t like to show off pictures of their friends and family in their home? While it’s perfectly fine to do so, when you’re selling your home, your personal photos and memorabilia might actually be a turn off for potential buyers. The reason? It makes it more difficult for buyers to picture their own family living in such a personalized space.

3. Choose a neutral paint color.
In an ideal world, homebuyers would be able to see past paint colors they don’t like and evaluate a home for what it truly is. In reality, however, that’s not always the case. If you daughter picked hot pink for her bedroom, or you painted the powder room in an edgy shade of navy, for example, you might want to consider re-painting the spaces in a universal neutral shade of pale gray, taupe, or white. True, it’s a hassle to repaint, but it’s almost guaranteed to pay off.
