Moving to New Jersey: How to Make it Easier
Moving to New Jersey? We’re happy to be the first to welcome you! It’s a beautiful state that literally has something for everyone: beautiful beaches, leafy suburbs, and a prime location between two of the world’s greatest cities, New York and Philadelphia, to name a few. Of course, like with any move, moving to New Jersey comes with a to-do list of tasks, chores, and paperwork. We’ve moved thousands of families and businesses in and around the state, and here are a few tips for making your move to New Jersey easier.
Get an ID.
Becoming an official New Jersey resident means more than just moving into your new home. The state of New Jersey requires all new residents to obtain state identification (a driver’s license or state ID card) within 60 days of moving, or before your out-of-state license expires, whichever comes first. If you apply for a New Jersey license after your license expires, you may be required to re-take your driving test.
Transfer your Registration.
In addition to getting a new ID, you’ll also need to transfer your vehicle registration to the state of New Jersey as well. Again, the timeframe is 60 days from the date you move. More information about obtaining your original title, and the process and feea associates with the transfer can be found on the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission website. There is also a helpful checklist for new residents here.
Choose the right help.
If you’re hiring a New Jersey moving or storage company to help you get settled into your new house, make sure it’s a reputable company. All New Jersey movers are required to be licensed by the state, something you can check by searching the firm’s name on the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs website.
